Why your child says maths is boring — and what actually changes it

Most children who say they hate maths do not hate maths. They hate answering questions nobody asked. Here is what changes when the number finally matters to them.

Ask a thirteen-year-old why they dislike maths and you will usually get some version of "it's boring" or "I'll never use it." Both are worth taking seriously, because both are accurate descriptions of how the subject is usually met.

The problem is not difficulty. It is consequence.

A worksheet asks: what is 20% of ₹150? The child computes ₹30, writes it down, and moves on. Nothing in the world changes based on whether the answer was right. The only consequence is a tick or a cross, arriving days later, from someone else.

Now put the same child behind a stall. They have paid ₹7 to make a glass of lemonade and they are selling it at ₹12. It is a slow afternoon and they decide to put up a 20%-off board.

They have just given away ₹2.40 a glass. Their profit has fallen from ₹5 to ₹2.60 — the price dropped by a fifth, and the profit dropped by nearly half.

Nobody has to explain that asymmetry. They watch it happen in their own ledger, with their own money, and it is annoying. That annoyance is the thing a worksheet cannot manufacture.

What "understanding" actually looks like

Here is a test worth applying at home. Ask your child:

If a shop cuts its price by 20%, does its profit fall by 20%?

A child who has memorised percentages will say yes. A child who has run a stall will say "no — much more than that, it depends what it cost to make."

That gap is the whole difference between recall and understanding, and it is invisible on most report cards.

Three things that consistently help

Give the number an owner. "What is 20% of 150" is nobody's problem. "You have ₹150 and you're deciding whether to spend a fifth of it" is theirs.

Let the mistake happen. The instinct is to correct a child before they lose anything. Resist it for one round. A ₹40 loss on Tuesday teaches more than a warning on Monday, and the recovery on Wednesday is the moment the learning actually locks in.

Ask about the decision, not the answer. "Why did you pick that price?" beats "did you get it right?" — it makes them explain their reasoning, which is where you find out what they actually understand.

What we watch for

When children play Lemonade Empire, the number we care most about is not profit. It is how fast they correct. A child who loses money on day one and fixes it by day two has demonstrated something a test score cannot show — that they can read a result, work out what caused it, and change their behaviour.

Growth, for a learner, is a function of the speed of learning. Not the starting point.
