What is AGI, and are we anywhere near it?

AGI stands for artificial general intelligence: a machine that could do any intellectual task a person can, rather than being good at one narrow thing. It is the thing people mean when they ask whether AI will replace everyone. The honest answer has three parts.

We are not there

Today's systems are extraordinary at language and specific tasks, and still fail at things a careful ten-year-old would not: reliable arithmetic, knowing what they do not know, and noticing when a question makes no sense.

They also have no way of being responsible for anything, which is not a small missing feature.

Nobody credible knows when

Serious researchers give estimates ranging from a few years to never, which tells you the honest answer is that this is not predictable.

Be suspicious of anyone who is certain in either direction — both "it is imminent" and "it is impossible" are being sold to you by someone.

What is true right now

It does hours of real work: reading, drafting, sorting, explaining, translating.

It cannot hold responsibility for any of it. Responsibility is not a capability that arrives in the next version — it belongs to a person by definition.

The useful mental model is not "a replacement". It is a very fast, very well-read junior colleague who has never once said "I'm not sure".

Where we actually are

A replacement that answers for its own worknot close

Firmly in the middle band, and moving. The gap that matters is accountability, not capability.

Practice

Is ChatGPT AGI?
Show the answer
No.
It is very strong at language tasks and unreliable outside them. General means all thinking tasks, not many.
If AI passes an exam, does that mean it is generally intelligent?
Show the answer
No.
Exams are made of text, which is exactly its strength. Passing a written exam says little about reasoning in the world.
Should students avoid careers AI might affect?
Show the answer
No.
Almost every career will be affected. Learning to use it well is a far better strategy than trying to hide from it.

Common questions

Is AGI dangerous?
Serious people disagree, seriously. What is worth teaching students now is nearer and less dramatic: today's AI is confidently wrong often enough that blindly trusting it causes real harm.
What should a student actually do about all this?
Learn how the thing works, so you can tell a good answer from a fluent one. That skill will outlast every model currently being argued about.
